The Challenge
The managed service provider (MSP) was using Wasabi as an S3 repository for client backups, but faced growing limitations.
Data outside Spain
European client data was stored in Wasabi regions outside Spain, complicating GDPR compliance and data residency requirements for regulated industry clients.
High latency
The distance to Wasabi servers caused latency in backup and restore operations. Recovery times were too long for the SLAs committed to clients.
Minimum retention policy
Wasabi charges for a minimum of 90 days of storage per object, even if deleted earlier. This inflated costs for short retention policies and temporary data.
Limited support
Wasabi's technical support was ticket-based in English with long response times. During urgent restore incidents, the lack of local support was a critical issue.
The Solution
Seamless migration to EasyDataHost Object Storage S3 with full API compatibility, no changes needed to Veeam configuration.
The first step was an inventory of Wasabi storage: buckets, volumes per client, retention policies and Veeam Cloud Connect and Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR) configuration. This allowed us to size the destination and plan a phased migration.
The migration was executed with rclone in parallel, leveraging EasyDataHost's peering agreements to maximize throughput. Being 100% compatible with the S3 API, the endpoint change in Veeam was seamless: same configuration, same backup flow, different destination.
EDH Object Storage uses Erasure Coding 6+2 on proprietary hardware at Data4 Madrid, delivering 11 nines of durability without the hidden costs of minimum retention or charges for traffic or API requests. Each MSP bucket was isolated with independent credentials.
