Why OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt and Veeam

OpenShift Virtualization and other KubeVirt-based distributions run virtual machines alongside containers on the same Kubernetes cluster. It is the path many organisations leaving vSphere take when they would rather not stand up another traditional hypervisor. Veeam 13.1 introduces the KubeVirt Proxy, built with the Kasten team, as the management interface for this ecosystem.

Veeam Kasten protects native Kubernetes resources: manifests, PVs, ConfigMaps and entire namespaces.

What you can do with Veeam

Protection capabilities available on OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt in Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.

backup

Agentless incremental backup

Forever-incremental copies using KubeVirt CBT. Only changed blocks travel, shrinking the backup window and network usage.

bolt

Instant Recovery

Boot the machine straight from the repository in minutes, without waiting for a full restore. Targets: vSphere, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV or Proxmox VE.

find_in_page

Granular restore

Recover a single file, a mailbox or a database table without bringing up the whole VM or restoring the entire backup.

apps

Application-aware processing

Consistent copies of SQL Server, Exchange, Active Directory, Oracle and PostgreSQL, with log truncation and point-in-time restore.

security

Malware scanning

Content analysis of the backup to spot dormant threats and locate the last clean point before restoring.

cloud_upload

Immutable offsite copy

Automatic shipping of restore points to our Madrid repository, with immutability and end-to-end encryption.

And the copy that saves you: offsite at EasyDataHost

Local backup handles accidental deletion. It does not handle fire, theft, or ransomware that reaches the backup console. That is why the copy of your OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt environment leaves your infrastructure and lands in our Tier III+ Madrid data center.

lock

Real immutability

Once written, the copy cannot be modified or deleted until retention expires. Not even with compromised admin credentials.

key

End-to-end encryption

AES-256 in transit and at rest. You hold the keys: without them the data is unreadable, including to us.

badge

ENS High and ISO 27001

Infrastructure certified to ENS High (RD 311/2022) and ISO 27001:2022, audited by SGS.

How it works

1

Veeam protects your OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt environment

Backup jobs run against your infrastructure and write to your local repository, on the window and retention you define.

2

A backup copy job does the rest

You add our repository as the secondary target. Veeam ships restore points automatically, incrementally and encrypted.

3

GFS retention and immutability

Daily, weekly, monthly and yearly per your policy. With immutability on, nobody can delete them early — you included.

4

You restore when you need to

Full VM, disk, file or application, straight from the offsite copy and without downloading the whole backup.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between protecting KubeVirt VMs and protecting Kubernetes? expand_more
They are two layers. KubeVirt VMs are protected as virtual machines, with their disk and operating system. The Kubernetes cluster itself — manifests, PersistentVolumes, ConfigMaps, secrets, namespaces — is protected with Veeam Kasten, which understands the declarative state of the application. A complete plan covers both.
Which KubeVirt distributions are supported? expand_more
Veeam Kasten covers the most widespread KubeVirt distributions, among them Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and SUSE Virtualization (Harvester). The 13.1 KubeVirt Proxy is the first step towards managing this ecosystem from the Veeam Backup & Replication console. We confirm exact compatibility for your distribution and version before any proposal.
Can I restore onto your infrastructure if I lose my OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt? expand_more
Yes. Beyond the offsite repository, we can bring your workloads up on our infrastructure while you rebuild yours. That is what our DRaaS service covers, and it runs on the same offsite copy you already have.

Shall we set up the offsite copy for your OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt?

We help you size the repository, define retention and leave the jobs running. No lock-in, with a trial first.
