The Challenge
The company operated without a structured backup strategy or disaster recovery plan, exposing the business to data loss and prolonged downtime.
No offsite backup
Backups were stored only locally, on the same hardware as production data. A physical disaster would have meant total information loss.
Manual backups
Backup processes relied on manual scripts without monitoring or alerts. Coverage was partial and inconsistent across the different sites.
No DR plan
There was no documented or tested disaster recovery plan. Recovery time for a major incident was indeterminate and could mean days of downtime.
M365 unprotected
Exchange, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint data had no dedicated backup. The Microsoft Recycle Bin was the only protection available.
The Solution
We deployed a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery solution with Veeam covering all of the company's environments.
The project started with an assessment of all company environments: production VMs per site, M365 services in use, data volumes and RPO/RTO requirements per application. This allowed us to size the storage and define appropriate retention policies.
Veeam Backup & Replication was deployed with Cloud Connect to our offsite repository, configured with immutability for ransomware protection. The 3-2-1-1-0 rule was fully implemented: 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 offsite, 1 immutable and 0 verified errors.
For disaster recovery, Veeam DRaaS was configured with replicas in our data center and orchestrated manual failover. In parallel, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 was implemented covering Exchange, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint with 3-year retention.
